Thank you for your interest in Citizens of the World Charter School Silver Lake! The admissions process for CWC Silver Lake/Echo Park is detailed below. The information packet link below will also provide an overview of our model, answer frequently asked questions and share the biographies of our founder, board and staff.
All our charter schools are public, tuition-free, and non-religious. Enrollment in the school shall be open to any resident of the state of California. No person shall be subject to discrimination on the basis of sex, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic group identification, race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, or disability.
Step 1: Touring Our School
Prospective parents are invited to join one of our guided, group tours or info sessions. While definitely not required in order to apply to the school, taking the tour will allow you to see our classrooms and hear from our principal, teachers, and parents about our school program.
All tours will be conducted on our K/1campus.
Please click on one of the links below to sign up for a tour.
November 5–10:30 am
November 14–7:15 pm
December 17–10:30 am
January 14–10:30 am
February 11– 10:30 am
March 4– 6:30 night
We will hold tours in the morning as well as larger information sessions in the evening. Both will give prospective parents a chance to look at the campus, hear about who we are and what we do and take a peek inside the classroom.
We can accommodate approximately 30 adults per morning tour. Tours are for adults only both due to space limitation and to avoid disruption to classes. We ask that just one adult per household attend to allow a maximum of families the opportunity to tour the school. The morning tours will last approximately 60 minutes. We can accommodate approximately 100 adults per evening info session. These are also for parents/guardians only. The evening sessions will last approximately 60 minutes and will include a virtual tour of the classrooms.
Step 2: Applying to CWC Silver Lake/Echo Park
In order to enter the Citizens of the World Charter School Silver Lake pool of applicants, you must submit an application by fax, email, mail, or in person, before the MARCH 3rd, 2014 deadline. Applications are available for download online (links are below) and paper copies are available for pick up in the CWCSL office.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: All applications must be received by Citizens of the World Silver Lake by March 3rd, 2014. Applications received after this date will not be entered into our lottery. They will instead be placed at the end of our wait list in the order received.
Step 3: Lottery
Here is how the lottery works:
If the number of students who wish to attend CWCSL exceeds the school’s capacity, except for the existing students of CWCSL, enrollment shall be determined by random public drawing (also known as a lottery) in accordance with Education Code §47605(d)(2).
Siblings of continuing students and children of founding parents (not to exceed 10% of CWCSL’s enrollment) are given preference in the lottery. Additionally, there is a preference for applicants residing within LAUSD boundaries. CWC does have an interest in adding a preference for free and reduced lunch eligible families and, if approved, will add this preference at the time of the lottery.
Please note that if you are extended an offer for enrollment through one of the preference above, you will need to provide supporting documentation in the enrollment packet to accept the enrollment offer. A verification of this will be done prior to finalizing your child’s enrollment.
If your child was offered enrollment via a preference and CWCSL deems that the child does not qualify, your child will be placed on the waiting list.
Within one week of the lottery, letters will be mailed to those families receiving an offer of a space at CWCSL. Those families will have approximately 2 weeks to respond and accept or turn down the space offered. Any spaces that become available will be offered to the next family on the waiting list until the class is full. Be advised that the time to respond and accept or turn down a space offered ranges from 2 weeks for the first round of accepted applicants (immediately after the lottery) and reduces to 72 hours for subsequent rounds and then 24 hours when the start of school approaches (after August 1st).
The public lottery will take place Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 7:30 pm. It will be held at The Assistance League, 5620 De Longpre Ave in the gymnasium.
Other Important Information
What is the minimum age for admittance to kindergarten in California?
According to the California Department of Education, the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 (SB 1381) changes the required birthday for admission to Kindergarten.
A child needs to be five (5) by:
• September 1, 2014, for entry into Kindergarten in the fall of 2014 and each school year thereafter.
CWC will adhere to these state guidelines in all situations. CWCSL will accommodate students qualifying for transitional kindergarten. Students must turn 5 between Sept. 2nd and Dec. 1st 2014 to qualify.
Enrollment for other CWC Schools:
